About Chocolate – I Bet You Didn’t Know These Facts

I tried to find some facts about chocolate and I came across quite a few good sites, so I tried to get the most interesting facts from each site.

Here are the facts:

  • The first time cacao was used for culinary purposes was about 3000 years ago in the lowlands of Mexico
  • Cacao was used as means of currency because it was so valuable in ancient Mexico
  • The first recorded case of “Death by Chocolate” occurred in the 17th Century.
  • In 1960, Chocolate syrup was used to simulate blood in the famous shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, “Psycho”. The scene, featuring Janet Leigh, took over 7 days to shoot.
  • Chocolate manufacturers currently use 40 % of the world’s almonds and 20 % of the world’s peanuts

  • The Mayans drank liquid chocolate during weddings, engagements, baptisms and even funeral.
  • Mexican nuns from the 1700’s as they created and exported the first chocolate product as a fund raiser for their convent. That’s when solidified chocolate was ‘borne’.
  • Napoleon took chocolate with him during his military campaigns. That was clever because chocolate gives you added energy and restores carbohydrates.
